“A feeling of déjà vu” as Charles Dhanaraj returns to Laurier as Lazaridis Visiting Chair

It’s been nearly three decades since Charles Dhanaraj earned his Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Laurier. But despite the time that has passed, he still feels a strong connection with his alma mater as he is poised to make his return as Lazaridis Visiting Chair.

“It was so transformative that it fundamentally altered the course of my life,” shares Charles of his time at Laurier. “Nicole Coviello’s early work was incidentally one of the pieces I had read at that time and her coauthor, Hugh Munro, was my professor in marketing. So, it’s a feeling of a déjà vu to come back and meet with some of my peers and see how the school is now.”

Charles, who is the HF “Gerry” Lenfest Professor of Strategy at Temple University’s Fox School of Business as well as the Founding Executive Director of Fox’s Center for Translational Research in Business and Executive Director of the Fox School’s Executive Doctorate in Business Administration program, will begin his stay as Visiting Chair on October 21.

His research focuses on strategic partnerships, global innovation, and emerging markets – areas in which he hopes to explore more while at the Lazaridis Institute. “I am hoping to build an instrument that we can use to test digital entrepreneurs’ global competency,” says Charles while noting “the irony is that most digital entrepreneurs think it’s so easy to go anywhere they want to go globally because the digital tools give them the reach. But, unfortunately monetizing an asset is not that simple. It needs a lot of business model prowess, cultural competence, and networks. That’s what we hope to expand during my visit at Laurier.”

While in Waterloo, Charles will teach in the Lazaridis Executive Master’s in Technology Management (EMTM) program alongside his former professor, Hamid Noori. He is also joining Scott Ensign and Karin Schnarr on October 25 for a workshop titled Case Teaching Throughout Disciplinary Contexts. All three panellists are exceptionally well-trained in case writing and teaching, a highly relevant skill for all disciplines. Charles's stay at the Institute runs from October 21-28. While here, he will occupy office LH 2014.
