Purpose
Canada has one of the world's most successful tech startup ecosystems, yet relatively few Canadian tech companies have grown into global enterprises.
The Lazaridis Institute is working to change this.
Constraints to Growth
In preparation for launching the Institute, we consulted with entrepreneurs, investors, policymakers, and tech influencers across North America and globally. We asked them to identify the biggest challenges in scaling a tech company.
The results?
- A shortage of executives with scaling experience (53%), particularly in key areas such as:
- Sales, marketing (68%)
- Organization design and execution (30%)
- Product management (17%)
- Internationalization (17%)
- Operations and finance (10%)
- Ecosystem dynamics, including attitudes toward risk and other cultural factors (20%)
- Insufficient access to capital (16%)
These insights have shaped the Lazaridis Institute's initiatives and research, focusing on the unique challenges high-growth tech firms face. By combining lessons from academic research and real-world practice, the Institute is developing a new curriculum to prepare the next generation of Canadian business leaders to lead and scale global enterprises.
