History

The Lazaridis Institute for the Management of Technology Enterprises was founded to support growth-oriented Canadian technology companies by helping them to scale-up and stay in Canada.

The institute owes its original inception to Micheál Kelly, current dean of the Lazaridis School of Business and Economics at Wilfrid Laurier University. Micheál brought his extensive experience in strategy and policy to the academic field of global business. In doing so, he identified a gap between the number of tech startups in Canada and the comparatively low number of large tech companies.

The idea for the Lazaridis Institute was sparked by a need to focus attention on what it will take to create a globally competitive technology sector in Canada. No other organization has focused on helping scale-up tech companies in Canada on a national level, until now.

Micheál built upon a strong reputation for business research and knowledge at the Lazaridis School to build support for this innovative new institute. He emphasized the opportunity to make a difference to the Canadian economy by keeping tech companies growing here, thus sparking the creation of jobs and keeping value in Canada.

In 2015, the Lazaridis School announced a $20-million donation by Mike Lazaridis and a contribution of $15 million from the Ontario government to found the Lazaridis Institute for the Management of Technology Enterprises.
