Lazaridis Institute: How did Mysa get started?

Joshua Green: The idea for Mysa originated during a consulting business I started that performed energy audits for homes and businesses. I learned first-hand how to listen to, and speak with, customers. Through these energy audits and conversations, I also learned about a gap in the market for a smart thermostat for high voltage heating, such as electric baseboard heating.

LI: As Co-founder and CEO, what is it that you enjoy the most about building a company?
JG: The most joy I experience during this journey of building a company is working with passionate people who are all about learning and achieving more and more. Every week, our company is growing in size, growing in maturity, and growing in ambition. That growth is amazing to witness.

LI: What milestone achieved by Mysa are you most proud of and why?
JG: The launch of our first product in February 2018 will always hold a special place in my mind. The amount of work, creativity, and perseverance that went into bringing that product to market over 18 months leading up to shipping was incredible.

LI: What motivated you to apply to the Lazaridis ScaleUp Program and what do you hope to get out of the experience?
JG: Zach (Co-founder and COO) and I have done a lot of things wrong and a lot of things right in our start-up journey over the last three years. One thing that stands out to me that we did well was talking to mentors, advisors, and other entrepreneurs who have been through it all before. When I saw the caliber of speakers and mentors in the Lazaridis ScaleUp Program, I knew this would be a once in a lifetime opportunity to have access to such amazing mentorship.

LI: Which program weekend are you most looking forward to and why?
JG: I am looking forward to the People and HR program weekend the most as it is what I spend most of my time these days working on. People are the foundation of any great company and it's an area I genuinely enjoy learning about.

LI: What’s the best part about being located in St. John’s?
JG: The best part about being located in St. John’s has been the support from the community which includes incubators, investors, start-up resources, government support, customers, and the general public. The support from everyone to help make Mysa a success has been phenomenal. It’s a special place that is perfect for start-ups.
