Dr. Mark Freel

Mark Freel is the Royal Bank of Canada Financial Group Professor for the Commercialisation of Innovations at the Telfer School of Management, University of Ottawa. He also holds an appointment as a professor of innovation and entrepreneurship at Lancaster University Management School, UK. Before moving to Canada in 2006, Mark held faculty positions at the Universities of Edinburgh and Aberdeen, and at Strathclyde and Warwick Universities. He has held editorial positions at the Journal of Small Business Management and the International Small Business Journal and currently serves on several editorial advisory boards. He served as the chair of the SSHRC Insight Grants panel for business and management in 2019 and 2020. Mark’s research interests are broadly concerned with innovation and entrepreneurship; with how firms and regions create and capture value. He has consulted for various branches of government in Canada, the UK and the EU on related issues.
