Lazaridis Executive Master’s in Technology Management (2013-2022)

Innovation has long been a driver of competitive advantage, with a significant, positive, and lasting impact on firm profitability. However, successful innovation requires overcoming technological, organizational, and market uncertainties. One of Mike Lazaridis's notable educational contributions was his support in founding the Lazaridis Executive Master’s in Technology Management (EMTM) program, launched in 2013. This was Canada’s first MSc degree specifically designed for executives, aimed at preparing leaders to navigate a fast-paced global economy where managing scientific and technological advances alongside strategic business goals is essential for success.

The 11-month program blended formal coursework, seminars, and independent research, starting with participants from then-BlackBerry. The EMTM program was deeply committed to experiential learning, focusing on developing C-level managers’ analytical, decision-making, and implementation skills. Through hands-on field activities and real-world business exposure, graduates gained autonomy in evaluating technology projects, preparing high-level business reports, and effectively communicating their expertise.

For technology-driven businesses, the ability to swiftly bring innovations to market is critical, especially in an intensely competitive global environment. The Lazaridis EMTM program was uniquely positioned to address the intersection of business and technology, offering high-level executive training designed to manage both technological advancements and the process of innovation in high-risk, fast-moving industries.

With a focus on results-driven knowledge, the program provided a distinctive mix of cutting-edge management practices and insights into emerging technologies driving global change. Though graduates earned an MSc in Management, the curriculum was specifically tailored to deliver deep expertise in technology and innovation management.

By the time the program concluded in 2022, the Lazaridis EMTM had cultivated an impressive cohort of executives from top technology companies and institutions, helping them navigate the challenges and opportunities of industries prone to disruption.
