Leading authority on e-commerce and market design set to visit the Lazaridis Institute

The Lazaridis Institute is pleased to welcome Nir Vulkan as the final visiting professor of 2019.

Nir is an Associate Professor of Business Economics at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford as well as a Fellow of Worcester College. A leading authority on e-commerce and market design, he will be presenting a special seminar titled “Equity Crowdfunding: A Good Idea?” on October 14.

Nir’s other area of focus is applied research in hedge funds, which is bolstered by more than 17 years of experience working as a systematic trader with some of the world’s leading hedge funds, often consulting trading firms and clearing firms on algorithmic trading. Alongside this work, he has developed models used widely in e-commerce, trading, and hedge funds.

Nir will be visiting the Institute from October 14 to October 23. Ammara Mahmood, who was previously a PhD student of Nir’s, is helping coordinate his activities during his visit. If you would like to connect with Nir, please email both Nicole Coviello (ncoviello@wlu.com) and Ammara (ammahmood@wlu.ca).

Title: Equity Crowdfunding: A good idea?

Abstract:

Equity Crowdfunding now accounts for the majority of early stage funding for UK start-ups – and it is growing. Yet, opinions still divide as to whether there is indeed wisdom in the crowds and whether the government is right in giving tax incentives for the public to invest in high-risk start-ups. In this talk, I will present some of the data I gathered and some of the research I, and other researchers, have carried out in this space. I will try to shed light on the very fast evolution of these platforms. This is particularly important now, as the FCA is re considering its approach to P2P lending and ECF.
