Lazaridis School Research Day to feature seminar on Fintech and Disruptive Innovation

The Lazaridis School's PhD office is hosting the 3rd Lazaridis School Research Day on Friday, March 9th (Time 9.30 am to 1.30 pm). The Venue will be 4th Floor Lazaridis Hall (in the Hallway by the Terrace). Douglas Deutschman, Dean, Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies will host the event.

The objective of the research day is to showcase our PhD/MSc student research using a poster format, and create a “positive space” for faculty and students to connect. We are trying to feature some of the best graduate students and their research across the business school for the event.

In addition, we  are hosting a seminar with generous support from the Lazaridis Institute for the Management of Technology Enterprises. Details are as below.

Topic: "FinTech and Disruptive Innovation in Financial Services"

Speaker: Michael B. Imerman, Ph.D., Theodore A. Lauer Distinguished Professor of Investments and Assistant Professor in the Perella Department of Finance, Lehigh University.

Time and location: 11 am to 12.15 pm LH3094 (Lazaridis Hall).

Abstract: The talk will provide insights into disruptive technological innovation in financial services, or “FinTech”.  The talk will focus on three aspects: (a) overview of different functional areas within FinTech with a few in-depth examples of innovation in these areas, including mobile payments, peer-to-peer (P2P) lending, robo-advisors, and online banking; (b) discussion of the increasing role that data science and analytics are playing in financial services, and more generally in business research.  This shift from a theory-based to data-driven philosophy in business and financial modeling has also been critical to the growth and success of FinTech; and (c) potential emerging risks that regulators and financial service professionals are concerned about as this new area continues to mature.

The seminar is of interest to all business faculty and students. Light lunch will be provided right after the seminar.

Looking forward to seeing you all at the Lazaridis School Research Day!
